Homefront is a first-person shooter video game developed by Kaos Studios and published by THQ. It was released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Microsoft Windows in 2011 on March 15 in North America, March 17 in Australia, March 18 in Europe and in Japan on April 14.^[1]

Overview

Homefront is a first person shooter created by Kaos studios set in the year 2027, taking place in various locations across the west coast as resistance members attempt to bring fuel to United States armed forces in San Francsico trying to launch a major counter offensive against Korean forces and take back the city.

Gameplay

Homefront's gameplay has been completely reworked from its origins and as sequal to Frontlines: Fuel of War, with new game modes planned, a new suite of weapons, and a totally new single player game. The enemy invaders were suppose to be Chinese but was changed to Korea for political reasons.

According to an interview with the design director of Homefront, David Votypka, by G4TV that the game will be based around guerrilla style tactics. Guerrilla weaponry will have modifications crudely tacked on (To reflect the desperate nature of the Resistance), while GKR weaponry will be properly modified. In the same interview, it appears that the developers will be employing real brands and products to help players build a connection with the setting and surroundings. Further, many familiar places, such as baseball diamonds and strip malls, have been radically repurposed by the enemy, while elementary schools become Resistance armories and tree houses become sniper roosts.

The game reportedly has a "magnetism" feature. This means that certain events will be drawn into and around the player in order to make the player feel more the center of the action (in a trailer shown, a crashing helicopter is "attracted" to the player and crashes just next to them).

Multiplayer has a feature called Battle Points. It allows you to buy weapons, vehicles, etc.

Promotion

THQ has announced that a Homefront novel is being written by John Milius and will be published by the Random House Publishing's Del Ray.^[2]

The managers of the Homefront Community website announced a free $20 gift card for a pre-order of Homefront on November 8, 2010 at midnight. The cards were handed out by employees in red sweatshirts with the Homefront logo.^[3] Kaos Studios followed this up with a mail-in $10 gift card available for those who pre-ordered Homefront before November 19, and missed the $20 gift card giveaway.^[4]

On March 2, 2011, THQ released dozens of balloons over San Francisco as a mock protest against the North Korean dictatorship in America. The balloons landed primarily in the bay, which drew the anger of local residents. THQ announced that the balloons were biodegradable, and posed no threat to the local wildlife. ^[5]

Versions

Homefront is currently being released in five versions:

The Steam version contained a promotional code for the Hero's Hachimaki, a hat in the game Team Fortress 2. In addition, a free copy of Metro 2033 was included, as well as an ingame early unlock for the Air Assault Drone.^[6]However, this was a pre-release offer only. ^{(It has since expired.)}

The Onlive game includes pass to play Metro 2033 for free as well, in addition to the Onlive gaming system.^[7]

The GameStop version comes with the "Resistance Pack" which contains an exclusive weapon, the 870 Express Shotgun, and early unlocks for the Air Recon Drone, the Auto Repair Ability, and the SCAR-L Rifle.^[8] These features are also available with a pre-order at the UK retailer GAME, and certain British supermakets like ASDA and Tescos.^[9]

The Best Buy edition has a code for three exclusive weapon camouflages: Jigsaw, Cracks, and Frost, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions come with an extra headset.^[10]^[11]

If Homefront was pre ordered on Amazon, the customer will get console avatar outfits and a digital mini-guide. ^[11]

The Xbox 360 version has the exclusive "suburb" map only on the Xbox 360

Plot

Sometime in 2013. North and South Korea unified in order to form the "Greater Korean Republic" and have annexed several into the Greater Korean Republic. By 2024 the Korean's have an country the size of the Japanese Empire in WW2 and war in the Middle East has left the world's oil supply diminished. In 2024, NATO has evolved into the "Western Coalition" and Russia and China formed the "Red Star Alliance" and the two organizations have been fighting over wells in Alaska, Caspian Sea, and the Middle East due to the depletion of oil. In 2025 the Red Star Alliance, mainly consisting of Koreans, Russians, and Chinese have begun an invasion of the Untied States and Europe. By 2027, the United States is in complete disarray from the third world war, and it's up to the people to fight and restore order and freedom to the Korean Governed Occupied America.

Protagonist Robert Jacobs, a former Marine helicopter pilot, wakes up in his make-shift house in Colorado being ordered to be sent to a reeducation camp in Alaska for failing to answer drafts from the Korean occupation forces. Alaska is currently under occupation by Russian forces who have been aiding the Koreans ever since the Koreans joined the war. Jacobs's trip is cut short when his bus is ambushed by American Resistance Fighters Connor Morgan and Rianna. Jacobs is led to Oasis, a Resistance hideout led by local state policeman and Resistance leader Boone Karlson. Boone, Connor, and Rianna are aware of Jacobs's background as a pilot, and recruit him to help acquire fuel for the United States military in San Francisco. Boone initiates the operation with himself, Jacobs, Connor Morgan, a former soldier, Rianna, an expert hunter, and Hopper Lee, a Korean-American technical expert.

Their plan is to steal several tracking beacons in a school used as a concentration camp. To do this they contact an inside man named Arnie that knows Boone. However, Arnie betrays the team to protect his children, forcing the team to kill him and eliminate all forces in the camp and discovered a mass grave to hide from enemy reinforcements. Shortly after, Jacobs, Connor, and Rianna succeed in locating the trucks and planting a beacon on one of them before making a last-minute retreat back to their base. Connor and the team return to Oasis only to discover that Boone and all of the inhabitants of the Resistance base have been killed by Greater Korean troops plus seeing a massacre that the Koreans begin to kill anything in their path on the Wall. They narrowly escape with other Colorado resistance fighters by breaching the fortress wall used to keep people trapped in the town into the wilderness of the west.

Jacobs, Connor, Rianna, and Hopper are able to escape from Greater Korean forces with information that a helicopter that they can use in the operation is located in a survivalist base in Utah. As the team arrives in the base, the Survivalists engage in short battle with Connor's team as they expressed disappointment that Boone died and after refusing to leave Rianna as "collateral." The team infiltrate the headquarters and manage to steal the helicopter, pursuing the fuel convoy nearing California. With the convoy successfully hijacked, the team continues their journey to San Francisco where they deliver the fuel and aid the U.S. military.

As the team and the military close in on San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge, they encounter heavy Greater Korean fighters. Nearing the other side of the bridge in a Humvee, the team narrowly escape death from fighting an automated ground combat drone that flips their transport over. Dazed from the accident, the helpless team encounters a large Korean convoy trying to push the resistance fighters and U.S. military back. With no other choice, Connor advances towards the convoy with a flare and orders a successful air strike, sacrificing himself in the process as the U.S. forces proceeded with their attack.

The news of the operation is then reported by the British media, reporting that the battle could be a turning point for American forces in the Korean occupation of the war. With the European Union currently being invaded by the Red Star Alliance, a calling for a meeting to initiate talks for helping the United States across the Atlantic Ocean, and to help defend Europe from total Russian take over have started to begin.

It is thought that the Koreans gave up governing there occupied American territory to either the Russians or the Chinese, and in 2029 all Red Star Alliance forces withdrew from American/Canadian soil. By 2031, an peace treaty between the Western Coalition and the Red Star Alliance began and officially ended World War III.

Multiplayer

The in game multiplayer feature multiple very large maps with a variety of terrains. There are a many vehicles ranging from troop transports to attack helicopters and tanks. The multiplayer game types include a Ground control (GC), Team Deathmatch (TDM), Skirmish, Battle commander (GC), Battle commander (TDM) and Battle commander skirmish. Each with its own objectives. In a match a player gains Battle Points which he can spend on vehicles and special abilities. There are also Abilities that the player can put on a custom class that aid in a special way. Vehicles are also in multiplayer spanning from troop transports to attack helicopters and tanks. There are also a variety of weapons spanning from assault rifles to sniper rifles and sub-machine guns.
