The APEX Corporation is a North Korean multinational technology company and is the world's largest defense contractor. The company is headed by the CEO and Premier of North Korea John Tae-se. It is the main antagonistic force in Homefront: The Revolution.
History[]
The company was originally founded as APeX Computers by Joe Tae-se in 1972. The company made its first successful marketing with the world's first personal computer, the APeX I, in 1975.[1][2] In 1977, Joe Tae-se took advantage of North Korea's gradual transition into a capitalist nation and made a deal with the moderate Premier Lee Dong-won for the subsidized manufacture of APeX computers in North Korea.[1]
In the 1980s, APeX Computers expanded their marketing to North America and its products were very well received in the United States.[1] As a result, APeX Computers ushered North Korea's digital revolution and catalyzed the Silicon River, a chain of tech startups straddling the Ryesong River.[2] After the successful launch of the APeX II personal computer in 1982, APeX hired talented programmers from both Korea and abroad, leading to the development of the first World Wide Web in 1988 and the first web browser, HORIZON, in 1989. By the end of the 1980s, APeX became the world's largest company, with revenues of $101 billion and profits of $5 billion, as its technology was used in everything from televisions to the International Space Station.[1][2] By the turn of the 21st century, APeX Computers had become an integral cultural influence in North Korea for establishing the nation as the most largest economic and technological superpower in East Asia.[2]
Despite its reputation, APeX was not without controversy. In 1988, an APeX-owned Chinese factory was exposed for mistreating its workers and disregarding environmental safety. Employees were forced to work overtime and taking 100-hour working weeks without proper training and protective gear.[1]
In 2003, Joe Tae-se passed away from cancer and APeX fell under the control of his son John Tae-se. Under John Tae-se, APeX Computers was renamed as the APEX Corporation to reflect its strength and modern identity.[1] Furthermore, Tae-se chose to expand the APEX Corporation into the arms industry and established the Advanced Weapons Division.[1] Although John Tae-se's new directions were poorly received by members of his board of directors in which many resigned, APEX military technology became highly profitable for the company.[1][2] Since the Advanced Weapons Division's inception, APEX was contracted to the Chinese and North Korean militaries.[1] The United States government soon followed in purchasing billions worth of APEX weapons and equipment for their ongoing wars in the Middle East. But unknown to the public, APEX had every piece of their technology chipped with remote access that allowed APEX to spy and control over huge sections of the world's militaries.[2] In 2022, John Tae-se was elected as Premier of North Korea, effectively solidifying the influence of the APEX Corporation into the Korean government.[2]
In 2021, the United States economy collapsed from the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis and their relentless military commitment in Middle East. The U.S. government accumulated 14 trillion dollars in external debt from investing on APEX military technology, and was unable to repay APEX and the North Korean government.[1] After negotiations between North Korea and the U.S. failed to solve the crisis, in 2025, John Tae-se made the decision to remotely shut down the U.S. military and its APEX-branded technology, and allowing the Korean People's Army to effortlessly invade and occupy America under the pretense of humanitarian intervention in order to force the U.S. to repay its debts.[1]
Throughout the duration of the occupation, APEX technology were heavily used by the KPA in oppressing and controlling the American people. APEX weapons in particular were specifically designed with a biometric system that prevented American resistance fighters from using them. APEX satellites orbiting over North America were extremely effective in tracking enemy combatants outside of American cities.[3] In 2029, the KPA occupation began to disintegrate when NATO, with help from the American Resistance movement, destroyed the APEX satellite network, causing the collapse of the KPA's weapon system and allowing NATO forces to launch their assault against the KPA.[4]
