In a joint statement issued in Niagara Falls, representatives from the US Immigration and
Naturalization Service, standing alongside their counterparts from Citizenship and
Immigration Canada, announced an end to the longstanding "Open Borders" policy that has
defined the relationship between the United States and its sister nation to the north.
Already required to present a passport at any border crossing, citizens of both nations will
now have to apply for Visas at least a month in advance to travel across the border.
Representatives stressed that special permits will continue to be issued for vehicles carrying
critical supplies, including oil and building materials, as well as food and medicine.
