Iran declared its intent to defend Iraq from what it called "unacceptable Saudi intervention"
today. Saudi Arabia, along with Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey, declared a coalition to
stabilize and guide the shaky nation of Iraq with support from the United States. Iran has
stepped up its rhetoric on this issue, declaring that Saudi Arabia has turned Iraq into a "client
state" and has stated that they won't allow colonization by a "corrupt group of thieves."

Iran launched its first incursions into Iraq, aided by the Kurds and the resurgent Afghani
Taliban. They struck out at Kirkuk and Arbil, capturing both cities on the same day. Iranian
bombers also struck key targets on Iraq's southern border, including a power station and a
bridge.
