One of the longest standing military alliances in the world came to an end on Tuesday as the
United States and Japan broke off talks to extend America's presence on the Island of
Okinawa. Initially planned as a continuation of a 2006 pact to re-organize the US Military
presence in Japan, the talks stalemated in March as the two parties failed to come to a
mutually satisfactory agreement.
As unification talks in Korea continue, the US military is seen as an increasingly redundant
force in the area. Citizens in both Japan and the US see the massive economic costs resulting
from the forces in the area as wasteful and not particularly valuable in an age of pronounced
economic decline.
